TYPE AND DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM

The Didactic Program in Dietetics

The Foods and Nutrition program, one of the four majors in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, currently offers a concentration in Food Systems Management, a Foods and Nutrition General Concentration and an ADA accredited Dietetic Internship. At Appalachian State University (ASU), students who intend to become registered dietitians take the Foods and Nutrition General Concentration.

The Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Foods and Nutrition was approved at ASU in the academic year 1945-46 and the dietetic program was first established in 1976 as an approved Plan IV in general dietetics. In 1991, the ASU Didactic Program in Dietetics was approved by the Commission on Accreditation and Approval for Dietetic Education (CAADE) of The American Dietetic Association. Full Accreditation of the Program was granted in 2001. Since the beginning of the dietetic program, the emphasis has been on general dietetics in order to meet the needs of the region served by this university. Alumni remain very supportive of the program by providing training opportunities for our students and serving as quest speakers when requested. In fact, nearly every registered dietitian in the local district has a relationship or connection with the Foods and Nutrition program at ASU.
