Off-Campus Options

Appalachian’s off-campus degree-completion program is designed to offer students the upper-level courses of the Bachelor of Science degree in Child Development: Birth through Kindergarten. The program currently serves cohorts at Cleveland Community College in Shelby. Additional cohorts are anticipated in Hickory at Catawba Community College beginning in Fall, 2005 and Wilkes Community College in Fall, 2006. For information about joining a cohort, contact the Office of Extension Education [link to www.ext-dl.appstate.edu]. Students planning to enter the off-campus program must have completed (or be in the process of completing) those general education courses typically taken in the freshman and sophomore years of a four-year college experience. To earn this degree with teacher licensure, students must complete required courses with the grades stipulated, as well as successfully pass PRAXIS exams and earn a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5.

In addition to coursework required to meet general education requirements, students are expected to complete the following Education courses within the community college for transfer credit in the BK program:

EDU 146 (FCS 2102) Child Study and Guidance
EDU 145 (FCS 2104) Child Development: 3 – K years
